Wussy in Cincinnati Magazine, first 2010 tour dates announced

Wussy is profiled in the latest edition of Cincinnati Magazine. The band has also been nominated for four CityBeat Magazine Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. Vote here (e-mail address required).

The limited edition Green Belt 7-inch with The Fervor is available here, at ear X-tacy, Underground Sounds, Skull Alley (Louisville), and Shake-It Records (Cincinnati). Both bands head to the East Coast in April, but for now we’ve got a few tour dates confirmed.

Phantom Family Halo performs tonight at Skull Alley with Young Widows and Russian Circles. The three bands have been on a tour of the east coast and Canada this winter. Showtime is 8 p.m. $10. Come celebrate the release of Phantom Family Halo’s new double LP, “Monoliths & These Flowers Never Die” on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at Lisa’s Oak St. Lounge (1004 E. Oak St. in Germantown). Softcheque and DJ Chaddles also perform. Doors at 9 p.m. Cover is $5. Each copy of “Monoliths” comes with a free digital download of the entire album. The band heads to the east coast and Canada beginning Friday, Nov. 27, with Young Widows and Russian Circles, so let’s send the band off in style.

Friday, Dec. 4: Joe Manning opens for Dave Rawlings Machine at Headliners Music Hall. Doors at 8 p.m. Tickets for the 18-and-over show are $20 an can be purchased at Ticketweb.com. Manning’s new track, “Lately at a Lesser Table” appears on The White Belt split 7-inch alongside “Anita” by Pokey LaFarge. The single is the first in The Belt Series, is pressed on white vinyl and designed by Dexterity Press in Chicago. the title is available at ear X-tacy, Underground Sounds, Skull Alley, karatebodyrecords.com and all Joe Manning and Pokey LaFarge shows. Additionally, Manning also appears on several tracks of the upcoming compilation, “Face A Frowning World: An E.C. Ball Tribute Album” with Bonnie Prince Billy, The Health & Happiness Family Gospel Band, Jolie Holland, Catherine Irwin and others, out Dec. 8 via Tompkins Square, as well as with King’s Daughters & Sons on ear X-tacy’s free digital Holiday compilation, available at thinkindie.com.

Friday-Saturday, Dec. 11-12: The Fervor plays its first West Coast dates at The Makeout Room and The Kaleidoscope in San Francisco. The band will spend two weeks there in December recording the follow-up to its 2007 debut, “Bleeder.” Meanwhile, “No Apology” appears alongside Wussy’s “Fly Fly Fly” on The Green Belt. The limited edition split 7 comes on translucent green vinyl, and fewer than 250 copies remain. The Green Belt is available at ear X-tacy, Underground Sounds, Skull Alley, Shake It Records (Cincy), karatebodyrecords.com and all Fervor and Wussy shows. On Dec. 31, The Fervor closes out 2009 with Arnett Hollow and DJ Kim Sorise at Headliners Music Hall. Ticket information forthcoming. Additionally, The Fervor’s singer and keyboardist Natalie Felker will appear on “Slight Spell,” the forthcoming album from The Ravenna Colt, featuring Johnny Quaid (My Morning Jacket). “Slight Spell” arrives in February. Wussy also lends a cover on the upcoming “Dangerous Highway: A Tribute to Eddie Hinton” being released by Shake It Records. Digital versions of “Among The Gold” featuring Arnett Hollow violinist/vocalist Cheyenne Mize and Bonnie “Prince” Billy are available as either a full EP or individual tracks from thinkindie.com.

Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 12-13: Pokey LaFarge returns to The Monkeywrench (Barret Ave. in the Highlands) following a massive, never-ending U.S. tour to support his latest CD, “Riverboat Soul.” LaFarge ends his two-night stint at Captains Quarters Dec. 13, before heading back over to the U.K., where his initial tour of the place met with rave reviews. The White Belt wax with Pokey’s “Anita” will be for sale at these and all Pokey LaFarge shows, but the singles are moving fast. Fewer than 150 are left.

Joe Manning, with Elephant Micah, Spirits of the Red City, Sunset and more for an all-ages show at Skull Alley. The Other Side of Life Blog and Events present a special 7-inch release show featuring singer/ghost-storyteller Joe Manning. Manning;s new song, “Lately At A Lesser Table,” appears on The White Belt, the first installment of The Belt Series, which pairs him with riverboat soul provider Pokey LaFarge, debuting a new song, “Anita.” 500 copies of the limited edition split single have been pressed on limited edition white vinyl. No digital, only wax for this one.

Oct. 30
Invaders with Wax Fang. Invaders’ debut CD Floating came out in July to rave reviews by The Courier-Journal, Velocity WeeklyThe Decibel Tolls and My Old Kentucky Blog, LEO Weekly and others. They followed up that momentum by closing out night 2 of WRFL’s Boomslang Fest in Lexington earlier this month with a rousing afterparty set at Al’s Bar. They’ll appear at Zanzabar Oct. 30, where they’ll open for local heroes Wax Fang, whose critically acclaimed CD La La Land was easily one of the best releases this decade. Showtime 9 p.m. $7

Nov. 6
The Fervor w/ Smug Brothers @ Zanzabar (2100 S. Preston St., 635-ZBAR, www.zanzabarlouisville.com): The Fervor will be celebrating the release of a new limited edition split 7-inch with Wussy. This single is the second installment in The Belt Series. A limited edition 500 copies are pressed on green vinyl, and these will be on wax only, no digital. The Fervor just returned from an east coast tour, where they debuted at CMJ’s Annual Music Festival, which took place all over New York City. Smug Brothers, from Dayton, features Don Thrasher, who is known for his work with Robert Pollard in the venerated Dayton group Guided By Voices.

Nov. 20
Phantom Family Halo celebrates the release of its double LP, Monoliths & These Flowers Never Die. This show features members of Sapat and The For Carnation, and has in the past shared stages with The Black Angels, Black Mountain, Entrance Band and last but not least, Louisville’s own Slint. Phantom Family Halo performs at Zanzabar with Softcheque. The double LP comes with a free download code people can redeem for a digital version of the album. Nov. 27, Halo leaves for a U.S. and Canada tour with fellow Louisvillians Young Widows (on Temporary Residence Limited, which is run by Louisville native Jeremy DeVine) and instrumental assassins Russian Circles

Today — okay, well … tomorrow, but come on, we’re excited! — Monoliths & These Flowers Never Die, the new double LP by Phantom Family Halo, arrives at ear X-tacy and Underground Sounds in Louisville. Each vinyl copy bought in the store, sold directly by the band or through us here at Karate Body comes with a free download card for a digital copy of the album. The double LP is 18 tracks of unbridled passion, close-quarter sincerity, epic and uncompromising experimentation. You’ll need time to digest this one, so we’re waiting until Nov. 20 for the record release show at Zanzabar (2100 S. Preston St., 635-ZBAR) in Louisville. Nov. 27, PFH embarks on a tour of the east coast and Canada with Young Widows and Russian Circles. This will be one of the most talked about tours this fall. Tour dates below.

Featuring “Anita” by riverboat soul provider Pokey LaFarge and Louisville ghost-song storyteller Joe Manning, this limited edition split 7-inch comes on white vinyl, and is also available here on our website, as well as the artists themselves. Packaging was done by Jeff Mueller at Dexterity Press, and mastering of the series is handled by Kevin Ratterman at The Funeral Home. Manning performs a very special 7-inch release show Oct. 29 at Skull Alley with Spirits of The Red City, Elephant Micah and Sunset. LaFarge is on tour through December. Out today is the special edition gold vinyl from Austin-based Ume. The Sunshower EP is a rockin’ fuzz freakout that will be available on Ume’s current east coast trek up to CMJ. Look for the 10” EP at their upcoming show in Lexington at The Green Lantern this coming weekend. There are only 500 copies of this one, too, so get yours soon. Ume, who just completed a west coast trek with Meat Puppets, Trail of Dead, Dead Confederate and The Secret Machines, will appear at next week’s CMJ Festival in New York City.

We were thinking of calling this weekend The Fussy Tour, but we didn’t know how that’d go over.

This Friday, Aug. 7, The Fervor joins Wussy and A Bit Shifty at Off Broadway in St. Louis. Doors are at 7:30 p.m. The show starts at 9 p.m. 21+ = $7, under 21 = $10.

Saturday, The Fervor and Wussy re-up for a show at Skull Alley. 9 p.m. $5. Comedian De Blenniss handles opening remarks. And, don’t forget, Wussy plays a free, all-ages in-store at 5:30 p.m. at Ear X-tacy. Their self-titled album just received four starts in Rolling Stone.

On Aug. 22, The Fervor returns to Whitesburg, Ky., which is every thing a small town should be, where they’ll play day 2 of MARS Fest. Peep that flyer up above.
