LEO Weekly on ‘Arise, Great Warrior’

On The Fervor’s latest, Arise, Great Warrior, the drama is more subdued than the title might suggest. From the opening track’s first couple of somber minutes to the point where it eventually kicks into overdrive, dynamics are vast but contained. Husband-and-wife duo Natalie and Ben Felker remains at the forefront, with the former’s laconic vocals and keyboard setting the mood while the latter’s guitars and harmonies dictate the hues. Subtle shifts and pivots keep the record engaging. That the band has taken such special care in its sleights of hand might preordain this record to be a grower. Hooks like the one in “Crazy for the Feeling” aren’t the sort that kick you out of your seat but burrow into your brain over time. And then there’s the closing track, “Let’s Get Loaded,” in which the subject matter dictates the tempo shifts à la the Velvet Underground’s “Heroin.” That’s the kind of stuff that’ll warrant those multiple listens.

Secret Stages / The Fervor

The Fervor will perform at the upcoming Secret Stages Festival in Birmingham, Ala., the weekend of May 13-14. Tickets go on sale next week. Arise, Great Warrior is in stores now on vinyl, and digitally through Removador and at all major digital retailers. The band’s record release show happens April 29 at Zanzabar.

We’re pleased to announce the arrival in stores today of “Andromeda,” the first-ever release by California Guitar Trio, who will celebrate their 20th anniversary next year. Though the group is known for its otherworldly covers of popular music, “Andromeda” is an original work. The LPs are packaged in limited edition metallic stock, and a free download is included. Shipping News ends a five-year break with a new LP, “One Less Heartless To Fear,” the band’s first since 2005’s “Flies The Fields.” The new album was recorded live at Skull Alley, Louisville’s premier all-ages venue, and in Japan at O-Nest. The praise for this record from these post-rock pioneers, which feature members of Rachel’s, Rodan, June of ’44, The Young Scamels and Imaad Wasif, has been consistent and positive, and we’re stoked to finally share it with you.
